Stockholm archipelago

Gällnö is an island in the central archipelago with lovely beaches, protected natural harbours and a well-preserved agricultural landscape. At Gällnö, there are red wooden sheds, boat houses and homesteads under the shade of knotty old apple trees. 

Here you will find a country shop, a hostel, cabins, a popular bar and a well-stocked café, and the smallest hotel in the archipelago with only one room! Torsviken bay has a natural harbour, a tenting area, and a sandy beach. A small strait separates the island from the neighbouring Karklö, but you can grab an island-hopping rowboat to get across.  Karklö also has an active agricultural farm with farm animals. 

Lidö is a leafy island in Stockholm’s northern archipelago. It is a popular destination for families with children, canoeists, and boaters. Here you can enjoy private bays, stunning nature, and great food at Lidö restaurant.

At the guest harbour there is an ice cream shop and a canoe rental. If you come by private boat, you can anchor in the picturesque natural harbour at Österhamn. Lidö restaurant offers both an award-winning restaurant and accommodation in a hostel, cabins, and glamping tents.

Örskär is located furthest north in the Stockholm archipelago. The island is quiet and beautiful with barren cliffs and a lighthouse that dominates the skyline.

During the summer season you can visit the lighthouse, take a guided tour and let yourself be mesmerized by the stunning panoramic view. Below the lighthouse there is a well-preserved idyllic archipelago village that used to be the residences of the sea pilots and lighthouse keepers. Nowadays the village houses are used as overnight rentals for those who wish to spend the night on the island. In the summer, the local restaurant serves both lunch and dinner. 

A hiking trail runs between the jetty Passbåtsbryggan and the lighthouse and there are several other marked trails that take you to different parts of the island. At the Archipelago Foundation jetty there are a couple of mooring spots, but please keep in mind that it is not possible to reserve these spots.

Sandhamn is far out in the outermost archipelago and is one of the most popular islands. In the summer, the harbour is full of visiting boats and tourists strolling the harbour.

You can come just for the day, have lunch or dinner at the historical Värdshuset or grab a snack at one of the many shops down at the harbour. You can also stay the night at one of Sandham’s accommodations, Seglarhotellet or Sands Hotel.

If you venture away from the harbour on one of the paths through the pine forest you will reach long sandy beaches with beautiful views across the ocean. At Sandhamn you can have a dip in the ocean from both cliffs and sand beaches of which Trouville is a favourite for many. At the harbour you will find cafés, bars, restaurants, boutiques, shops, and hotels. Or you can rent a kayak to go exploring by sea. 

Landsort, or Öja as the island is really called, is located furthest south in the Stockholm archipelago. Here you can enjoy beautiful nature, a rich animal life and a genuine archipelago village. 

The island has a country shop and two restaurants, and if you want to stay overnight there are rental cabins, a hostel, and a bed & breakfast. You can have a swim in the ocean from cliffs and take a stroll across the island on paths that run from north to south. The most famous attraction on the island is the magnificent lighthouse which is Sweden’s oldest. Nearby is the tall pilot tower where you can stay overnight in the spectacular hotel. Another popular spot is Batteri Landsort, an underground military facility from the cold war which has been converted into a museum.
